What is Supraspinatus Tendinitis?

Supraspinatus Tendinitis is a painful condition affecting the supraspinatus tendon in the shoulder.

The supraspinatus muscle is part of the rotator cuff, a group of four muscles and tendons that help stabilise and move the shoulder joint.

The supraspinatus muscle begins at the upper part of the shoulder blade and its tendon passes beneath part of the shoulder structure before attaching to the upper arm bone, known as the humerus.

Repeated loading, overuse, injury, or age-related changes can irritate the tendon and cause pain.

The term tendinitis is commonly used to describe this condition. However, some long-standing tendon problems may involve degenerative tendon changes rather than ongoing inflammation and may also be described as supraspinatus tendinopathy.

Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to significant pain that affects daily activities and sleep.

Shoulder Pain: Pain is commonly felt on the outer or upper part of the shoulder.

Pain When Lifting the Arm: Raising the arm to the side or overhead may cause discomfort.

Range of Motion Assessment: Active and passive shoulder movements are evaluated.

Strength Testing: The strength of the supraspinatus, other rotator cuff muscles, and shoulder blade muscles may be assessed.

Special Clinical Tests: Specific shoulder tests may be used as part of a wider assessment, although no single test alone confirms the diagnosis.

Functional Assessment: Reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, work activities, and sports movements may be evaluated.

Relative Rest: Complete inactivity is generally not required, but excessive loading may need to be reduced.
