What is Pes Anserine Bursitis?

Pes Anserine Bursitis affects the bursa located on the inner side of the knee, slightly below the knee joint. A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction between tissues as they move.

The pes anserinus is the area where three muscles—the sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus—attach to the inner upper part of the tibia (shin bone). The pes anserine bursa lies between these tendons and the underlying bone and helps the structures move with reduced friction.

When this bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, it may cause pain and tenderness on the inside of the knee. Symptoms can develop gradually due to repetitive stress or overuse, although other factors such as muscle tightness, weakness, altered movement patterns, and certain knee conditions may also contribute.

Pes Anserine Bursitis can affect people of different activity levels. It may occur in runners and other active individuals, but it can also develop in people who place repeated stress on the knees during everyday activities. A proper assessment is important because pain on the inner side of the knee can also be caused by other conditions.

Pain on the Inner Side of the Knee: Pain is commonly felt on the inside of the knee, usually slightly below the joint line.

Tenderness to Touch: The affected area may feel tender or sensitive when pressure is applied.

Pain During Walking: Walking, particularly over longer distances, may increase discomfort in some individuals.

Pain When Climbing Stairs: Activities that repeatedly bend and load the knee, such as climbing or descending stairs, may aggravate symptoms.

Physical Examination: The inner side of the knee is assessed for tenderness, swelling, pain, joint movement, muscle flexibility, and other physical signs.

Location of Tenderness: Pain and tenderness located slightly below the inner knee joint line may help identify involvement of the pes anserine region.
