What is Cubital Tunnel Syndrome?

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve becomes irritated, compressed, or stretched as it passes through a narrow space on the inner side of the elbow called the cubital tunnel. The condition can cause numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness, particularly in the little finger and ring finger. Symptoms may worsen when the elbow remains bent for long periods, such as while sleeping, talking on the phone, or driving. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is a condition affecting the ulnar nerve, one of the major nerves that travels from the neck through the arm and into the hand.

At the elbow, the ulnar nerve passes behind the bony prominence on the inner side of the elbow, commonly known as the “funny bone.” In this area, the nerve travels through a narrow passage called the cubital tunnel.

When the ulnar nerve becomes compressed, irritated, stretched, or repeatedly stressed in this region, it can cause symptoms in the elbow, forearm, and hand.

The ulnar nerve provides sensation to part of the hand, especially the little finger and part of the ring finger, and helps control several muscles responsible for fine hand movements and grip.

Common Symptoms

Numbness: Reduced sensation may occur in the little finger and part of the ring finger.
