What is Ankle Instability?

Ankle Instability refers to a feeling or pattern of repeated instability around the ankle joint.

The ankle relies on a combination of:

Tendons

Balance and Proprioception

to remain stable during standing and movement.

When these structures or systems are affected, the ankle may feel less secure.

Ankle instability may develop after an injury, particularly a lateral ankle sprain involving the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.

Two commonly discussed forms include:

Mechanical Ankle Instability: Physical changes in the ligaments or joint structures contribute to excessive movement or reduced stability.
