What is Ankle Fracture?

An Ankle Fracture occurs when one or more bones around the ankle joint crack or break. The ankle joint is primarily formed by the lower ends of the tibia (shin bone) and fibula, which connect with the talus in the foot.

Common types of ankle fractures include:

Lateral Malleolus Fracture: A break involving the lower end of the fibula on the outside of the ankle.

Medial Malleolus Fracture: A break involving the lower part of the tibia on the inside of the ankle.

Bimalleolar Fracture: Fractures involving both the medial and lateral malleoli.

Trimalleolar Fracture: A fracture involving the medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, and the posterior part of the tibia.

Posterior Malleolus Fracture: A fracture involving the back portion of the lower tibia.

Stable Fracture: The bones remain in an acceptable position and may sometimes be managed without surgery.

Displaced Fracture: The broken bone fragments have moved out of their normal alignment.

Open Fracture: The fracture is associated with an open wound and requires urgent medical treatment.

Some ankle fractures are associated with ligament or syndesmosis injuries, which can affect ankle stability and treatment decisions.

Severe Ankle Pain: Pain often occurs immediately after the injury.

Swelling: Significant swelling may develop around the ankle.

Bruising: Blue or purple discolouration may appear around the ankle or foot.

Difficulty Bearing Weight: Standing or walking may be painful or impossible.

Tenderness: The area around the fracture may be very painful when touched.

A suspected ankle fracture should be medically assessed promptly. Avoid trying to force the ankle to move or putting weight through it until appropriate medical advice has been received.
